Our Journey

About Clean Food Solutions

Could there be something hidden in our foods that's making us sick beyond what labels or trends tell us?

Clean Food Solutions was established with a clear purpose: to identify and promote high-quality foods that are free from pesticides, mycotoxins, and harmful food additives. In a food system increasingly burdened by hidden contaminants, the organization was founded to fill a critical gap—providing consumers with access to cleaner food alternatives and trustworthy information. Its creation stems from a commitment to advancing public health, particularly for children, by focusing on the often-overlooked presence of mycotoxins and their potential impact on long-term wellness.

Beyond offering clean food guidance and recipes, Clean Food Solutions dedicates research funding to studying foodborne mycotoxins, aiming to understand their prevalence and health effects, particularly in vulnerable pediatric populations. Through education, advocacy, and evidence-based resources, the organization empowers individuals to make informed choices.

The mission is simple yet powerful: To help improve human health one bite at a time.

About Our Founder

2017

Questioning the Status Quo

While completing her graduate work, Susan begins noticing alarming gaps in public knowledge about food contaminants, especially in children's diets.

2018

First Encounter with Mycotoxins

Through early literature reviews, Susan identifies Deoxynivalenol (DON) as a common yet underreported contaminant in grains. This sparks her first deep-dive into the science.

2019

Linking Toxins to Inflammation

Her analysis of DON and similar mycotoxins reveals strong associations with gut inflammation, immune disruption, and developmental issues in children.

2020

Uncovering Systemic Gaps

She noted that many mycotoxins, while prevalent in the food supply, are not only understudied but remain unregulated or poorly regulated. Consequently, contaminated products appeared to be finding their way into our homes and diets. She began searching for mycotoxin-free ingredients to make food for her family, testing them using mycotoxin screening equipment and collaborating with a laboratory that could verify her results through advanced LC-MS/MS laboratory techniques.

2021, 2022

Publication and Peer Review

Susan began to share the results of her work at conferences through poster presentations. Over time, her research began to gain traction in academic circles, leading to peer-reviewed publications and collaborations within the scientific community.

2023, 2024

Building the Solution

Frustrated by inaction, Susan began testing foods from various food producers, looking for basic ingredients produced using stricter cleanliness and quality assurance practices. As suspected, food manufacturers with better quality control practices also seemed to be producing products that were free from mold contaminants. Companies that utilized cold storage, strict cleaning protocols, and dehumidification were producing the cleanest ingredients. Fresh whole foods and foods produced by companies addressing food allergies with strict quality procedures appeared to be among the cleanest. With this information, she began bridging the gap between research and what made its way to her family’s table.

2025

Expanding the Movement

From public speaking to brand advocacy, Susan works to make science accessible and empower families with tools like her book The Fungus Among Us: Science and Recipes for a Cleaner Diet to avoid harmful mycotoxin exposures. She has also developed partnerships with companies dedicated to producing higher-quality foods for consumers and founded Clean Food Solutions.

Today, Susan’s mission goes beyond research papers. She’s working to make mycotoxin awareness as common as gluten-free, helping families protect what matters most through clear education, better food choices, and new science-backed products.
