Seasonal Food Guide

Foods eaten in their natural season tend to be fresher, more flavorful, and richer in nutrients than produce consumed outside its peak time. While strawberries may be available all year, they are at their best when purchased directly from local farmers soon after being picked. Because seasonal fruits and vegetables from nearby farms travel shorter distances, they usually reach consumers at a fresher stage. Out-of-season produce, on the other hand, is often harvested before fully ripening so it can withstand shipping and distribution, which reduces both flavor and quality. Research also shows that fruits and vegetables retain more nutritional value when they are allowed to ripen fully on the plant before harvest.
